Obituary for Ralph A. Roman Sr.

Ralph A. Roman Sr.
ROCKLAND – Ralph A. Roman, Sr., 84, died Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at his son’s home, after a brief period of declining health.
Born in Rockland, March 14, 1927, he was the son of Michael and Laura Kaler Roman. He attended local schools.
Ralph started work at a young age and over the years held various jobs. His family said that he was truly a “Jack-of-all-Trades’, and excelled at anything to which he put his hand. In keeping with requirements for bonding, he meticulously kept a log of every job he ever held. Maritime work ultimately became his passion and he served several years as Chief Engineer on a tug boat out of Belfast, Maine, and worked for some time on a barge out of Galveston, Texas.
A World War II, United States Navy veteran, he served aboard the SS Hannis Taylor, SS Sea Nymph and SS Sea Tiger.
Except for three, Ralph lived in every state of the Union,. He made many friends all across the U.S. while he traveled throughout the country. In 1985 he returned to Rockland where he has since resided.
An avid musician, he played many instruments including guitar, piano, organ and accordion. In past years he had a band the ‘East Coast Ramblers’, who often performed at the former Knox Theater and WRKD radio. He was always happy and would whistle wherever he went.
Many people will remember his exclamation of ‘Fantastic!’ whenever anyone asked how he was. This earned Ralph the nick name of ‘Mr. Fantastic’ at Stella Maris House where he has resided the past several years.
He was an accomplished crafter and made leather goods and Indian jewelry.
Predeceased by his son Clifton M. ‘Kip’ Roman on December 31, 2009, Ralph is survived by three sons Ralph A. ‘Bud’ Roman and his wife Ingrid of Rockland, W. ‘Bill’ E. Roman, Sr. and his wife Jean of Thomaston, Jeffrey ‘Jeff’ Roman and his wife Renee of Warren; a daughter-in-law, Cathy Roman of Ocala, FL; two brothers, Burt Brewer and his companion Chris of Freeport, Michael Roman of Rockland; one sister, Maxine Seavey and her husband Pike of Woodland; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and a great-great grandchild born recently and who’s birth he was thrilled with; as well as many dear friends at Stella Maris House.
Visiting hours will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Monday, November 21st at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. A graveside committal service at Glen Cove Cemetery in Rockport, will be announced in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society of Knox County, P. O. Box 1294, Rockland, ME 04841.
